It was only a few months back when Mercedes-Benz Malaysia officially launched the all-new C-Class locally-assembled version in the local market. Prior to this, we benefited from the car in a fully-imported version.

Being one of the automaker’s best-selling models since the very beginning (with over 10.5 million units delivered globally), the CKD C-Class is expected to be welcomed by equally open hearts by Malaysian customers as well.

So, thinking from a buyer's perspective, who is out there to buy the C-Class tends to get confused over the questions as to ‘which variant to buy? Here we are with the answer.

The locally-assembled C-Class is offered in two variant options - standard C200 Avantgarde and top-spec C300 AMG Line. Both of these will be discussed in depth to know which one is the better choice.

Compared to the SST-inclusive, CBU version, the base C200 Avantgarde is now RM12k cheaper and similarly, the C300 AMG Line costs RM 17k less. Also, each purchase is accompanied by a 4-year, unlimited mileage warranty.

The C-Class C200 Avantgarde is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine generating a maximum power output of 204 PS from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm along with a peak torque of 300 Nm from 1,800 to 4,000 rpm.

The range-topping C300 AMG Line, on the other hand, gets the bigger 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol mill pumping a maximum power of 258 PS at 5,800 rpm and 400 NM from 2,000 to 3,200 rm.

The power generated both by the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol units is sent to the rear wheels via a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission system.

Further improving the driving dynamics, the C-Class comes tuned with DYNAMIC SELECT, agility control suspension with a selective damping system, and an integrated starter generator.

The base C200 Avantgarde comes with AVANTGARDE exterior part of which is LED high-performance headlights (for left-hand traffic), adaptive high beam assist, electrically folding exterior mirror, 18-inch 5-spoke light-alloy wheels with run-flat tyres, and underbody protection.

The top-spec C300 AMG Line, on the other hand, benefits from the AMG Line exterior. The lighting units remain the same with LED high-performance headlights and adaptive high beam assist. Making the variant distinctive are elements like the Mercedes-Benz pattern grille, 19-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, TIREFIT, panoramic sliding sunroof, and a braking system with a large brake disc on the front axle.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class CKD model comes equipped with several standard features on the inside. Overall the cabin of both the variants is pretty much the same.

The list includes a sun protection package, mirror package, memory package, stowage space package, THERMATIC automatic climate control, comfort seats, power front seats with memory function, 4-way lumbar support, folding rear-seat backrests, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, KEYLESS-GO comfort package & starting function, hands-free access, ambient lighting with brand logo projection, interior light package, door sill panels with illuminated ‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering, electric sunblind for the rear window, automatic dimming mirrors, boot lid remote closing, independent boot locking, and interior monitoring system.

Like the interior, the connectivity function in both the CKD C-Class models remain more or less the same. Part of the specs sheet is - MBUX navigation premium, MBUX multimedia system, 11.9-inch central display, 12.3-inch driver display, hard-disc navigation, extended MBUX functions, preinstallation for Live Traffic Information, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto support, fingerprint scanner, advanced connectivity plus and USB package.

As an add-on, the top-spec C300 AMG Line trim gets MBUX augmented reality for navigation.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class packs a strong safety kit that is standard across the range. The pack includes - a Lane Tracking package, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, PRE-SAFE, cruise control, URBAN GUARD vehicle protection, parking package with reversing camera, active parking assist with PARKTRONIC, pedestrian protection, tyre pressure monitoring, anti-theft alarm system, rain sensor wipers, and rear belt status indication.

The C300 AMG being the top-spec model gets a parking package with a 360-degree camera. Rest all remain the same.

Both the variants of Mercedes-Benz C-Class CKD are almost identical, apart from the clear powertrain distinction. Being the top-spec model the C300 AMG Line gets one or two extra features and nothing else.

So, a customer can make a decision as per the requirements.
